You have
taken the first step into becoming a first-class individual! We are
very serious about our training, and you should be too! Attending
classes should be a top priority in your life, and using guides like
this one is crucial to making the learning process more enjoyable.

of the Martial Arts left in the world today. With tradition comes rich
culture, and methods that have been handed down over many years. What
we do here works. It has helped thousands before you to transform into
a solid individual and you should treasure what you learn and practice
the methods with the utmost humility towards your seniors.

Code of
Conduct:
All
students must understand these rules before signing up for training.
Students should learn and remember these rules that constitute proper
dojang behavior and are essential to maintaining a safe and positive
training environment. The dojang is much more than a "training hall." It
is the place where the spirit is forged through rigorous physical
conditioning, self-discipline and introspection (looking within). The
dojang has its own culture and it takes time to learn the proper
procedures and rules. You should ask any Kyo Sa member if you have any
questions. Students must approach and correct others not abiding by the
dojang rules, but this needs to be done in a non-demeaning and courteous
manner. Anyone who violates these rules will be subject to disciplinary
action (including suspension, revocation and or expulsion) as directed
by Sa Bom Nim.
Titles in
the dojang:
|
Head of Dojang: Kwan Jang Nim, Grand Master: Do Sa Nim, D.
W. Kang |
|
Chief Instructor: Dae Sa Bom Nim, Sung Kang |
|
Certified Instructor – Kyo Sa Nim |
Certified Master Instructor – Sa Bom Nim |

Basic
Etiquette
Bowing in
the dojang has no religious connotations. The Korean and Japanese
culture greet each other by bowing. Bowing can also have the functions
of thanking and apologizing. Bowing may range from a small nod of the
head to a long 90-degree formal bow. You are supposed to bow deeper and
longer than your opposite if they are of higher status than you are.
Your back and neck should be kept straight while bowing. Standing is a
half bow, and on the ground is a full bow.
|
 |
Students must face the kukke (flags)
and respectfully bow when entering or leaving the dojang. |
|
 |
Students must bow to the senior student on the floor and always
bow to any dan members upon first meeting them. |
|
 |
If Sa Bom Nim arrives late or leaves early, the class should be
brought to attention and bow as a group. |
|
 |
Students shall bow to each other prior to mutual exercise and
upon completion of that exercise. |
|
 |
Absolutely no disrespect will be shown to any instructors or
fellow students. |
|
 |
Students should follow the instructions of their sunbae nim. |
|
 |
Respect your fellow students’ experience in other arts. As well,
do not expound upon your experience to others during class,
regardless of how it may relate to the techniques being taught.
|
|
 |
Students shall refer to the chief instructor as Sa Bom Nim (Sung
Kang), and assistant instructors as Kyo Sa Nim
at all times in the dojang
and outside the dojang when the conversation relates to dojang
and training matters, otherwise they should be referred to by
last name. |
|
 |
Students, who arrive late should wait on the side by the post on
one knee, to join the class. |
|
 |
A
student cannot leave class early without the permission of Sa
Bom Nim. |
|
 |
There is no talking in class unless you have been recognized by
Sa Bom Nim by raising your hand or using the phrase "Sillye Ham
Ni Da Sa Bom Nim” (excuse me teacher). |
|
 |
Talking in the changing rooms should restricted to matters
concerning practice. Gossip is strongly discouraged. |
|
 |
Students shall learn and uphold the correct ways of sitting and
the proper way of standing. |
|
 |
Students shall answer loudly with a “Sir!” or “Ma’am!” when
called upon. |
|
 |
Shaking hands, giving and receiving items shall be done with the
right hand assisted by the left hand. |
|
 |
Juniors should never walk in front of seniors, period.
|

dojang. Outside food and drink is not allowed. |
|

and tenets of TKD |

|
 |
Your uniform must be folded properly after class and should
always be mended and clean. |
Teaching
and Demonstrations
|
 |
If you need extra stretching or warm-ups, do them before class
begins. |
|
 |
There is only ever one Sa Bom Nim teaching class.
Don’t offer advice to your fellow students. |
|
 |
Sunbae Nim will assist lower ranked belts in their training, but
only upon the request of Sa Bom Nim. |
|
 |
Whenever Sa Bom Nim is explaining or demonstrating all students
should give him their full attention. |
|
 |
Never contradict or attempt to correct Sa Bom Nim or Sun Bae
Nim. Discuss such matters with SaBomNim privately. |
|
 |
No interrupting while the instructor is teaching in class. If
you have a question, wait until the instructor is done speaking
and raise your hand. |
|
 |
Students should question what they do not understand but answers
are not debatable. |
|
 |
Students must not practice any technique that has not been
formally taught to them by Sa Bom Nim. |
|
 |
Respect other styles but practice your own. Knowing "a little of
this" and "a little of that" usually ends up being "a lot of
nothing." If you practice more than one style or art, keep them
separate. |
|
 |
You must have explicit permission from your Sa Bom Nim to
demonstrate any aspect of TaeKwon-Do. |
|
 |
You must have explicit permission from Kang’s Institute of
TaeKwon-Do, LLC before teaching anyone outside of class or
opening a dojang. |
|
 |
Expression of poor behavior will result in disciplinary action
and possibly suspension from your membership. |
Attitude
|
 |
Your family and work comes first. Come to class after you have
fulfilled these obligations. |
|
 |
As you advance, ego is a constant enemy. Remain humble.
|
|
 |
Always accept correction positively and with an open mind.
|
|
 |
Always be courteous in demeanor and be helpful to juniors and
each other. |
|
 |
Always maintain a beginner's attitude. You can't learn if you
think you already know it. |
|
 |
Pay close attention to what your instructor has to say at all
times. |
|
 |
Come to class to learn. Practice at home or during open practice
times. |
|
 |
Do not become angry or upset in the dojang. |
|
 |
It is far better to know one poomse well than dozens of poomse
poorly. |
|
 |
Never criticize other schools or styles of the martial arts.
|
Dojang
Duties
|
 |
All students share in the responsibility for keeping the dojang
safe and clean. |
|
 |
Please arrive at least a half of an hour earlier to prepare
targets and get changed so that training can begin on time. |
|
 |
Every student should help clean the dojang floor and mirrors
after each class. |
|
 |
Never let a student with higher seniority work harder than you. |
|
 |
Never leave clothing or valuables of any type in the dojang. We
will not be responsible for these articles if lost or stolen.
There is a lost and found in the first locker of each dressing
room. It will be recycled each week. |
Rank
|
 |
Rank testing is a privilege, not a formality. Students must be
prepared to not pass. |
|
 |
There are minimum time periods between rankings. However,
training for the minimum time period does not entitle the
student to promotion. Many factors are involved in promotions
such as time in rank, attendance, technique, teaching ability,
helpfulness, attitude, courtesy, effort, contributions to the
art, etc. |
|
 |
Never request to be tested or promoted. Sa Bom Nim will let you
know when you will be tested or have been promoted. If you ask
for promotion "you will cease to exist." This means that Sa Bom
Nim will see you but not see you. |
|
 |
Accept a promotion with a sense of increased responsibility to
your fellow students. |
Testing /
Graduation
Every two
months, the entire color belt population is expected to graduate onto
the next rank. During graduation, the new rank will be awarded along
with any other certificates and awards. Dates for graduation is posted
on the website and is available at the office. Students will be
required to have 4 black stripes, 3 red stripes, black belt requirement,
and a minimum of 16 classes in order to be eligible to graduate. Once
you have your minimum requirements, do not assume that you are going to
automatically move up in rank. You must still be approved by your
instructor, be current tuition account as well as a clear disciplinary
record.
Curriculum Stripes
The
system of curriculum stripes is awarded on a bi-weekly basis. When a
student understands and is able to perform the material taught in the
class and as described in the curriculum, he/she will be awarded a
curriculum stripe. It is imperative for students to attend class in
order to receive curriculum stripes. If a student missed the chance to
earn his stripe, you must make up the material on Saturday, or wait
until the next cycle to graduate.
Attendance Card
The
attendance card goes hand-in-hand with the student’s progress. The
student is responsible for picking up an attendance card at the front
counter before class. The instructor refers to the card in class to see
what the status of the student is. If the student is lacking in any
area, the instructor will recommend a private lesson to be scheduled.
The student may not make any marks on the card. It is the instructor’s
job to check and make sure the student is learning properly so as to
give the necessary credit on the card.

Kang’s
Family Code:
1 - Be
loyal
to your country:
We should be very
proud of our own countries and the world. Hundreds of generations
before us tried their best to make our lives better by building great
countries for us to live in. Many people even died while trying to make
our lives better. We should not take that sacrifice lightly or for
granted.
2 - Be
obedient
to your parents:
Our parents
brought us into this world and care for us. They changed our nappies,
fed us and love us even when we are at our worst. Now, that is love.
We show them our love and gratitude by being respectful, loving and
obedient.
3 - Be
lovable/loving
with your husband or wife:
Express love and
respect with all faithfulness and devotion to one another. Marriage is
a life-long commitment that should be carefully nurtured and protected.
4 - Be
cooperative
with your brothers and sisters:
Getting along
with brothers and sisters can be difficult at times. When you are with
them almost every minute of the day, it can be easy to get tired of
them. But, it is very important to cooperate and help each other. Life
is suffering, but so much easier without conflict and anger. Also, when
you cooperate with your brothers and sisters, you fulfil the second
commitment: obedience to your parents.
5 - Be
respectful
of your elders:
Sometimes, we may
look at our elders as being old fashioned. They do not seem to
understand the latest technologies or listen to the same music that we
do. But, when it comes to living life our elders have a great advantage
over us: experience. Our elders have seen so much more, experienced
much more and felt so much more than we have. Life lessons are timeless
and we can learn many things from our elders. They deserve to be
respected above everyone else.
6 - Be
faithful
to your friends:
Being faithful to
our friends means being there for them when they need you and never
letting them down. Make sure that you are the good and kind friend that
you want to have in your own life. Complete trust and loyalty will keep
your friendships healthy. Never betray a confidence. Show support when
your friend is down.
7 - Be
honorable
with your instructor (establish trust between teacher and student):
Trust is a vital
part of the teacher-student relationship. The student needs to trust
the teacher, that the teacher is masterful within her/his art. But, the
teacher must also be able to trust the student, that the student will
not take her/his teachings and use them in manners that bring dishonor.
8 - Be
discreet
with the use of TaeKwon-Do, use it justly:
Everything in the
universe serves a purpose. All purposes are important. No matter how
big or small that purpose is, whether being a King or being a housefly.
Only for our protection and defense should a living thing be destroyed.
9 - Be
brave,
never retreating in battle:
Not every battle
we face is actual physical combat. In fact, we face our own little
internal wars everyday. Thoughts inducing anxiety, uncertainty, being
overloaded with work, being scared about the future and even taking
exams are all battles that we face. Another way to word this commitment
is: never run away from your problems and responsibilities.
10 - Be
consistent,
always finish what you start:
A finished
project is an accomplishment. A project left unfinished is but a waste
of energy and time. You will feel rewarded when you finish with all
confidence that it has been done to the best of your ability.
